History of the Flower Show

Clevedon circa 1890

The current show site on the Salthouse fields is bottom right of picture.

The Clevedon Horticultural Society was formed in 1869, the same year as Clevedon's historic pier opened and held its first show later that year, in Herbert Gardens.

Entries were split into 2 categories; "gentlemen with gardeners" and "cottage gardens"

The show proved very successful and grew rapidly, by 1873 the Bristol and Exeter Railway was running excursions to the event and paddle steamers brought more visitors from Wales.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian era, Clevedon became an increasingly popular destination for the well-to-do, and the show flourished.

The Show was suspended for the duration of the First World War, not resuming until 1921, World War Two likewise saw no shows being held between 1939 and 1946

Except of one year, when a shortage of volunteers, resulted in the event being cancelled, the show has run (almost) continuously since the end of

the war.

Over the years, the show has been held a various venues throughout the town; Herbert Gardens, Clevedon Court and the Community Centre, before moving to its current site on the sea front in the late 1960's.

Looking Back on the 2016 Show

The2016 show proved to be a very successful event; attendance was well up on last year, as were show entries. We were  extremely fortunate with the weather, missing all of the showers that effected other parts of the county. The crowd were treated to some excellent entertainment and the bar and hog roast proved to be very popular. The children's corner, run with the help of Pickles Playrooms was a big success and we had a good selection of trade stands once again. Lady Elton presented the trophies to the various class winners.

Planning has already started for next years event and we are all looking forward to producing an even better show next August.

Volunteers needed

We are looking for volunteers to help us over the show week, with things like setting up, helping in our cafe, manning a stall or packing away at the end of the show. Also people who could give up a few hours at various times throughout the year.

Clevedon Flower Show has been held for nearly 150 years, for the enjoyment of the people of Clevedon. we receive no outside help or funding and can only continue if we have enough volunteers to run the event and can generate enough income, to cover the considerable costs involved in putting it on.
